Horse Painter Florence Jardine-friggins Shares Her Story

Instagram is such a great venue for artists to showcase their work. For this week’s interview, we found artist Florence Jardine-friggens on Instagram. Her amazing horse portraits immediately caught our attention. We especially were drawn to her life-sized horse painting which appears later in the interview.

How do animals inspire your artwork?

I study zoology so I really love animals and I am fascinated by all aspects of their lives including their anatomy, I mostly have the pleasure of drawing people's pets which I thoroughly enjoy as capturing the individuality and personality of pets can be a real challenge. I am particularly drawn to the eyes of animals as I think they are so telling about the nature of that animal and trying to capture the animal’s spirit in their eyes is a challenge that I relish.

What is your favorite piece of artwork you've created and why?

I painted a 7 foot horse oil painting of a beautiful bay horse, which I thoroughly enjoyed painting as I love doing large paintings but rarely get the opportunity.

Anything else you'd like to let us know about your artwork or yourself?

My love of science often comes into my art and my biggest inspiration is George Stubbs (1724 – 1806 English painter)in particular his anatomical studies of horses. I find anatomy really interesting and love looking at skulls and using this to help improve my drawings.
